LANCOM equips all VoIP routers with the VoIP Media Proxy

LCOS 7.5 improves communications between different SIP providers

Aachen, June 19 2008 — The free update to LANCOM Operating System LCOS version 7.5 equips all LANCOM VoIP routers with the LANCOM Media Proxy.

The Media Proxy solves a problem common to VoIP calls that are based on SIP: By way of example; when transferring calls between external subscribers calling via different SIP providers, technical issues at the provider end frequently cause these connections to fail. Part of the problem is that providers do not carry out the adaptations necessary for seamless communication – such as the adjustment of target IP addresses, for example.

The LANCOM Media Proxy solves this problem by changing the ports and IP addresses in the data packets and adapting special media end points to the corresponding target networks (e.g. ARF networks, interface and IP address). Calls between subscribers using different types of line, such as SIP PBX lines and SIP provider lines, can now be connected and transferred smoothly and without broken connections.

The Media Proxy also provides a high-security environment for local networks. Incoming and outgoing voice-data packets terminate at the Proxy, which then allocates these packets to their associated connections. Consequently, only media streams that belong to authenticated SIP connections can pass through the router. The only termination point that is visible from the outside is the LANCOM VoIP router. There are no direct connections to terminal devices in the local network, neither via SIP nor for the voice data in RTP.

The latest LCOS 7.5, detailed data sheets and further information are available for download from the LANCOM Web site: www.lancom.eu
