LCOS 7.8: New software for LANCOM devices
Free LCOS update for improved VPN performance and even better security
Aachen, January 12, 2010—LANCOM customers can now download a free update to the operating system for LANCOM routers, access points, WLAN controllers and VPN gateways. LCOS 7.8 offers a multitude of new features, and internal structures and algorithms also benefit from numerous new developments. The biggest gains are in VPN performance with large numbers of simultaneous network connections.
The combination of enhanced certificate management and optimized monitoring make LANCOM central-site VPN gateways with LCOS 7.8 ready for state-of-the art multi-CA environments which use VPN intensively.
Some of the new features in brief:
Better scalability – Revised algorithms multiply the performance of LANCOM central-site VPN gateways working with multiple remote peers. SNMP communications and the display of large tables with the network monitoring tool LANmonitor have been optimized. For the compact devices of the 1700 and 1800 series, the number of configurable Advanced Routing and Forwarding (ARF) contexts has been doubled to 16 different networks. This presents users with new possibilities in the field of virtualization.
RADIUS connection for XAUTH – Connecting XAUTH to RADIUS servers allows VPN-client access to be controlled on a per-user basis with central user management. Even greater security is provided by changing passwords by means of OTP tokens (one-time password tokens) for VPN-client login. The one-time password (OTP) displayed by the token changes every 60 seconds. When the Advanced VPN Client requests the password, the user enters the token ID which is on display during the login. If an attacker discovers the current ID, it quickly becomes useless.
Improved support of certificates – Support of multiple certificate hierarchies with CRLs, indices for simplified addressing, and wildcards for certificate checks are all improvements enabling LANCOM VPN to operate in multi-CA environments.
