Free update for LANCOM devices brings SMS notification, data-volume control and new hotspot functions

Aachen, February 19, 2014—LANCOM Systems, the leading German manufacturer of networking solutions for enterprises and the public sector, releases a new free update for their access points, WLAN controllers, routers and gateways. In addition to the previously introduced wireless optimization solution "LANCOM Active Radio Control" (ARC), version 8.84 of the LANCOM OS LCOS brings a host of new features to LANCOM devices. The focus is on enhancements to the management functions and a rounded-off feature set for the LANCOM hotspot solution.

Full control through data volume management

Especially for cellular connections with limited data volumes, it is important to have control over the amount of the allowance that has been used up. With LCOS 8.84, LANCOM routers log the data volumes consumed by the different VPN and WAN connections (e.g. DSL, 3G or 4G).

A rounded-off LANCOM hotspot solution

The LANCOM hotspot solution received extensive enhancements with the last operating system updates, including Hotspot 2.0 functions and the support of hotel management systems such as Micros Fidelio or protel. The new LCOS 8.84 provides yet more additions to the LANCOM Public Spot option.

In combination with LANCOM cellular routers, hotspot access credentials can now be automatically sent to the users by SMS. For controller-based hotspots, the Hotspot 2.0 features are now easily managed by profiles in the WLAN controller. If there is an interruption to the central Internet access, hotspot users now receive a corresponding notification. The language of the Hotspot login page now automatically adapts to match that of the users' clients. Supported languages are English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Dutch.

Error notifications via SMS

LCOS 8.84 upgrades LANCOM cellular routers into SMS gateways, so that IT administrators can receive SMS notifications about any network event, such as a failure of the DSL line, directly on their mobile phones. There is no need for an external SMS gateway.
