Hi-tech Made in Germany for the "inHaus2" Fraunhofer Project

LANCOM Systems helps to build the house of the future

Aachen, September 3, 2007 - Just three months after groundbreaking, the topping out ceremony is being held for "inHaus 2", Germany's most innovative property. Nine institutes of the Frauhofer Gesellschaft are cooperating with industry partners to research the construction of buildings and commercial properties of the future. LANCOM Systems is a components partner in the project. The German hi-tech provider is equipping the construction site with wireless networking.

In constructing and operating inHaus2 the partners are breaking completely new ground. Documentation takes up a central role here. Digital records document the entire life cycle of the property. This helps to identify and exploit potential savings. All information relevant to the building's life cycle can be made available. Information on the building's construction and management is to be documented in a manner suitable for the court of law. Among other things, the network provided by LANCOM connects three cameras for a continual view of construction progress. Not only can the construction manager monitor the progress at any time; the property developer can regularly provide photos and generate time-lapse movies of the construction - a completely new method for the documentation of building progress.

The LANCOM networks are also being used to implement further innovative methods. All equipment and supplies are fitted with RFID tags (Radio Frequency Identification) and are automatically recorded when they enter the construction site. The data capture equipment is connected over the wireless networks from LANCOM. Another application for the RFID technology is materials monitoring. Quick-setting concrete is being used due to the good sound-insulating qualities of its surface. RFID sensors are poured with the concrete to monitor the hardening process. With a life cycle lasting several years these components continue to provide information such as temperature or humidity from inside the walls. This data is also captured and logged with the aid of the LANCOM networks.

The LANCOM components also provide wireless network access throughout the building and its grounds. At any time, authorized persons with WLAN-capable devices can access central data and the Internet. LANCOM will continue to provide WLAN throughout the property's operation.

"The inHaus2 project is the next stage in networked buildings," explains Ulrich Prinz, Managing Director of LANCOM Systems GmbH. "That is why we are so proud to be involved with this project. As a provider of hi-tech Made in Germany, innovation is our obligation - we are constantly thinking "outside the box" of standard networking technology. This is why the involvement in the inHaus2 project was such a good move for us."
