New version of the operating system for LANCOM devices

Free update to LCOS 7.7 for numerous new functions and performance improvements

Aachen, August 19, 2009 — The new version 7.7 of the LANCOM operating system LCOS offers not only performance improvements for all LANCOM routers, access points, WLAN controllers and gateways, but also a multitude of new features.

The Internet Access Wizard now offers a convenient way to set up VDSL connections for Internet access, Internet TV and telephony. Just a few mouse clicks is all it takes to set up Double Play and Triple Play with VLAN-property assignment and activated IGMP snooping.

Wireless LAN users updating to LCOS 7.7 benefit from significant optimizations relating to IEEE 802.11n (draft): Performance and stability of WLAN connections have been further improved. A new standard WLAN function is BFWA support (Broadband Fixed Wireless Access), which until now was available only on request. Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs) can employ BFWA wireless bridge links based on LANCOM access points in the 5.8-GHz band with up to 4-watt transmission power. Long-distance wireless LAN links offer a cost-effective method for extending broadband Internet coverage to rural areas.

The terms under which BFWA may be operated and the permitted transmission powers vary from country to country. Providers wishing to deploy BFWA should refer to the relevant authorities for the valid specifications in their respective country.

LCOS 7.7 automatically activates hardware acceleration of VPN in all of the LANCOM 17xx and 18xx VPN routers, an option that was formerly subject to a fee. The greatly increased encryption performance takes a load off the CPU, freeing up capacity for the tough demands that modern networks place on business-class routers.

The comprehensive implementation of TACACS+ for authentication, authorization and accounting (AAA) when logged in with the LANCOM configuration tools LANconfig, WEBconfig and telnet/SSH provides centralized control over the rights to change configuration parameters. This greatly simplifies the reliable, secure and efficient monitoring of large-scale installations.

WLAN hotspot operators benefit from new options for greater flexibility in budget management as provided by the LANCOM Public Spot Option after updating to LCOS 7.7. The Public Spot Wizard has been designed for greater comfort and efficiency in daily business.

Further information and details are available from the LANCOM Web site. LCOS 7.7 is available for immediate free download from www.lancom.eu.

"LCOS 7.7 means performance improvements for all LANCOM users. All of our branch-office routers of the 17xx and 18xx series benefit from additional hardware acceleration, formerly available only with a VPN option, now at no charge. VDSL is increasingly of interest to business customers, and the Internet wizard now takes care of automatically setting up double- or triple play with maximum possible convenience. WLAN operators benefit from significant improvements in 802.11n and BFWA for WISPs." says LANCOM Product Manager Roland Burlaga.
