Site networking and wireless LANs merge:

LANCOM Systems integrates WLAN controller into router

Aachen, July 17, 2012 - LANCOM Systems, the specialist for network and site connectivity, enhances its 1781 series routers to include WLAN controller functionality. Hotels and restaurants can now use their existing router to manage their WLAN installation as well.

The WLAN controller option (WLC-6 Option), upgrades the LANCOM models 1781EF, 1781A, 1781A and 1781-3G/4G routers to full-fledged WLAN controllers. Without any additional hardware, the WLC-6 Option enables up to 6 wireless access points or WLAN routers to be centrally configured, monitored, and managed.

The option is ideal for smaller professional WLAN installations, such as in small hotels, restaurants or campsites.

Automatic configuration, channel selection, and security

All settings are defined once in a central profile on the WLAN controller - the rest is true plug & play. New access points are detected automatically, after having been added to the network, and they are identified securely via digital signatures. The configuration settings for optimum operation of the wireless network, such as the channel settings and security policies, are sent automatically to all access points. Similarly, centralized permanent performance monitoring, including background scanning, is carried out through these routers fitted with the WLC-6 Option.

Smart separation of guest access and user data

Like the LANCOM WLAN controllers the WLC-6 Option also includes smart controller architecture that enables, among other things, the separation of management data and user data.

Depending on the application, or even on a per-user basis, the wireless controller can forward data in different ways – bridged directly into the LAN, separated from the LAN in a dedicated VLAN for guest access, or tunneled to the central controller as an overlay network for VoWLAN - a valuable feature in multi-service environments.

The LANCOM WLAN controller option (WLC-6) is available now and supports up to 6 access points per unit. It is available for LCOS operating system version 8.62 and higher.

A 30-day trial version is available for download from the LANCOM website.
