Central management for multi-service WLAN networks

Aachen, October 10, 2007 - LANCOM Systems present their new WLAN Controllers LANCOM WLC-4006 and LANCOM WLC-4025. The new WLAN Controllers are state-of-the-art hardware components for secure yet simple management of sophisticated WLAN installations. All of LANCOM's current access points and WLAN routers can optionally be managed by the new WLAN Controllers after a free firmware update. This gives users the freedom to choose from a large portfolio of indoor, outdoor and industrial access points.

All of the WLAN settings are entered into a central profile in the WLAN Controller just once - everything after that is simple Plug&Play. New access points are discovered automatically and, once securely identified by digital signature, they are integrated into the network. Every access point automatically receives all of the configuration settings necessary for optimized operation of the wireless network, including channel settings and security policies. Operations are permanently monitored centrally by the WLAN Controller, including background scanning.

WLAN networks are extended easily and securely simply by "plugging in" new access points. Even remote sites can be seamlessly integrated into the central WLAN management - any IP connection will do.

LANCOM "Smart Controller" architecture

Rahul Bobba, WLAN Product Manager at LANCOM Systems: "LANCOM's 'smart controller' architecture is putting an end to the debate on centralized or decentralized WLAN architectures. Our solution offers the best of both worlds. Traditional switch-based WLAN controller architecture is increasingly proving to be a bottle-neck on data rates with 802.11n, and replacing it is expensive."

LANCOM WLAN Controllers can forward the data in different ways depending on the application or even the user - be it direct bridging to the LAN for maximum performance, separation from the LAN and into a dedicated VLAN for WLAN guest accounts, or tunneled to the controller for Voice-over-WLAN overlay networks.

A further element of the LANCOM Smart Controller design is its unique redundancy concept. Not only can multiple controllers combine to form redundant clusters with automatic load balancing; even a single controller - unlike many other centralized systems -works effectively to prevent the occurrence of single points of failure by allowing APs to continue to operate self-sufficiently.

Shipping now, each LANCOM WLAN Controller can manage up to 6 (LANCOM WLC-4006) or 25 access points (LANCOM WLC-4025). An upgrade option doubles the numbers of managed devices to 12 and 50 access points respectively. Pricing ranges from 1499 EUR excl. VAT to 6249 EUR excl. VAT (LANCOM WLC-4025).
