Version 2.01 of the IPsec client improves user friendliness & performance

Free update for the LANCOM VPN client for Mac OS X

Aachen, May 20, 2011 – German network vendor LANCOM now offers its customers a free update for the LANCOM Advanced VPN Client (MAC). It offers not only improvements in user friendliness, including its integration into the Mac OS menu bar and the new "Tip of the Day"; version 2.01 of the IPsec VPN software significantly reduces the load on central-site VPN infrastructures with its new split-tunnel mode. The client supports the operating systems Mac OS 10.5 Leopard (Intel) and Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard. The update is available as a free download from the customer portal myLANCOM on the LANCOM web site.

Now integrated into the MAC OS menu bar, the program no longer has to be started manually to establish a VPN tunnel. The main functions – connect, disconnect, edit profile, view information and log, open program window, and exit VPN client – are directly accessible in a pull-down menu. The icon in the menu bar displays the status of the VPN connection and of the firewall.

A further improvement in user friendliness comes with the "Tip of the Day" with useful information on the application's configuring and its options. For instance, how to incorporate a company logo into the client's software interface.

The new split-tunnel mode reduces the load on central-site VPN infrastructures. This technology allows access to external web sites to bypass the VPN client; at the same time, access to internal DNS names – such as when accessing the intranet – is directed through the VPN tunnel. The data traffic in the tunnel and at the VPN peer is greatly reduced. This function reduces the load in particular for networks with numerous clients.

Version 2.01 of the client software also supports EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol), providing additional security when accessing corporate networks that use 802.1X or a RADIUS server for authentication. Certificate-based authentication is also possible. EAP prevents unauthorized users from accessing the LAN.
