LANCOM routers replace PBXs

Private exchange functions migrate into routers for companies use

Aachen, August 14, 2007 - The disappearance of conventional telephone systems has so far been limited to private households. LANCOM Systems now enables companies to dispense with PBX systems with the new version 7.20 of their operating system LCOS in combination with their business VoIP routers.

Following the amalgamation of voice and data into a single connection, now the router and PBX have been integrated into a single device. This opens the way for significant cost reductions, for example, when equipping offices, subsidiaries and home workplaces as all vital communication functions are united into one device. Often a separate PBX becomes completely unnecessary.

The free update to the new LCOS version 7.20 immediately equips the business VoIP routers LANCOM 1722, 1723, 1724 and 1823 VoIP with functions such as call hold, swap, transfer, connect, call forwarding, group calls and call distribution for local SIP, ISDN and analog subscribers.

A variety of exchange-line connection types are possible including ISDN lines, analog lines, Internet VoIP providers and also connection to central VoIP PBXs over VPN.

The same applies to all LANCOM VoIP-ready routers that are equipped with telephony and PBX functions by means of the LANCOM VoIP Options. What was a router now becomes a fully functional SIP PBX with VoIP and ISDN interfaces—ideal for deployment at field sites or home workplaces.

Along with the usual network functions such as ADSL+ router, VPN gateway, firewall and remote maintenance, LANCOM business VoIP routers additionally offer ISDN, analog, and SIP interfaces for the seamless integration of conventional terminal equipment such as telephones, faxes and the latest VoIP telephones.

In combination with the new LANCOM VP-100 VoIP telephone and the PC telephone software LANCOM Advanced VoIP Client, up to 32 subscribers can be simply and cost-effectively provided with telephony and network services.

Roland Burlaga, Voice-over-IP Product Manager at LANCOM: "The integration of what used to be a separate router and PBX into a single device is a milestone in communications technology. This will boost the merging of the IT and TC worlds, and also the acceptance of VoIP technology. Small and medium-sized businesses also find a path to Voice over IP migration with our professional and cost-effective product portfolio which has a focus on practical application in everyday business. Quick and flexible expansion simply by adding in LANCOM VP-100 telephones along with commissioning that is completed within seconds are features that are of great interest to customers in this segment."
